Climate Targets 2030

Germany on Track for 2030 Climate Targets – but Long-Term Challenges Remain

Germany is well on its way to achieving the legally binding 2030 climate goal, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 65% compared to 1990. The expansion of renewable energy continues: in 2024, more than 54% of gross electricity consumption came from renewables. The energy sector in particular has significantly reduced its emissions.

However, experts warn: after 2030, things will get harder. The 2045 carbon neutrality target is at risk. The main reasons are the slow transformation in the transport and building sectors, along with declining natural carbon sinks such as forests and wetlands.

Opportunities for Municipalities, Utilities, and Businesses

– Municipalities benefit from funding programs for regional storage and energy projects.
– Utilities can open up new business models through smart grids and flexibility markets.
– Companies and industry save costs through load management and efficiency measures while securing a competitive edge.

Outlook

Germany is likely to reach its 2030 targets – a significant success. But to achieve climate neutrality by 2045, additional efforts are needed now: investments in storage, grid relief, nature-based CO₂ sinks, and a determined transformation of transport and construction.
